FIRESTRONG® Products

FIRESTRONG® FIRE-RESISTANT COMPOSITES

Fire damage is one of the costliest types of damage that the U.S. experiences annually, with some estimates in the hundreds of billions for economic costs and damages. To help industries cope with increasing risks of fire, Creative Composites Group (CCG) offers fire-retardant resin system options for most of its composite products. From utility poles and phenolic tunnel shrouds to proprietary and custom OEM composites, CCG’s FireStrong® products reduce damage and keep infrastructure safer from fire.

Benefits of CCG’s FireStrong fire-resistant Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) products:

  • Property & Critical Infrastructure Protection
  • Energy Delivery & Grid Hardening
  • Unique Chemistry, Fiber Architecture, Matt Technology & Resin System
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Light Weight
  • Environmental Safety
  • Low Lifetime Cost of Ownership
  • Sustainably Made in the USA

CCG’s FireStrong products are made with industry-leading engineered resin systems, including phenolic, vinyl ester, polyester, isophthalic polyester, modified acrylic and specialty resins. CCG works with customers to choose the appropriate resin system to meet a product's fire-retardancy needs.

FireStrong products like Tower Tech modular cooling towers and TuffSpan® building products are approved by top agencies for their fire-retardant properties. FireStrong Tower Tech models are the only fully factory-assembled FRP cooling towers to earn an FM certification. TuffSpan meets FM 4881 Exterior Wall System standards and has earned FM 4880 Corner Fire Test approval without sprinkler requirements or height limits. It also has an ASTM E-84 flame spread rating of Class 1: 15 or less and an ASTM E-84 smoke development rating of <300.

Phenolic Resin for Composite Products

Phenolic resins deliver outstanding performance qualities when used as the binding agent in FRP, helping maintain the strength and stiffness of fiber reinforcements, even in very high temperatures. Compare this to conventional resins, which often lose strength and produce high levels of smoke when exposed to high heat.

Benefits of Phenolic Resin:

  • Intrinsically fire retardant, resisting temperatures exceeding 570°F
  • Self-extinguishing
  • No intumescent coatings, fire retardants or fillers
  • Low smoke emission
  • Less toxic smoke (CO and CO2)
  • Meets the strictest fire regulations

Almost every CCG product may be produced with phenolic resin for additional fire resistance and can be manufactured using pultrusion or vacuum infusion processes. CCG has developed the expertise needed for phenolic manufacturing, which requires higher levels of skill and more complex processing than typical resins, and proudly uses phenolic resin made by Bakelite Synthetics.

Transit Tunnel Shrouds

Subway or metro tunnels often deteriorate in the damp underground environment. Concrete spalls, shedding pieces onto the tracks. But the tunnel’s daily role in transportation makes repair work harder. Cities can’t afford the months-long process of repairing traditional materials.

FireStrong fire-retardant composite phenolic tunnel shrouds can replace traditional materials, offering:
  • Design Flexibility
  • Light Weight
  • Non-slip Surface
  • Fire-Retardant Composite Materials
FireStrong shrouds are made with a phenolic resin that makes the final material non-combustible. This prevents the devastation of fires in enclosed, underground tunnel spaces during installation, repairs and tunnel operation.

Canarsie Tunnel Saves Significant Repair Time

Hurricane Sandy flooded significant portions of New York and New Jersey in 2012. More than half of the Canarsie Tunnel, part of New York’s subway system, was damaged. Repairs with traditional materials would have stranded over 250,000 daily commuters from Brooklyn for 15 to 18 months. The Metropolitan Transit Authority avoided this “L-Train apocalypse” by choosing FireStrong FRP phenolic tunnel shrouds to repair the tunnel without ever closing the tunnel.

Grid Hardening with FireStrong Poles

A weak power grid with aging wooden utility poles can easily go down in fire and can be very difficult and costly to restore. Exposure to fire causes a standard wood utility pole to lose area from its design section. As a result, its engineering properties can change, losing strength and stiffness. Compromised poles must be replaced.

FireStrong utility poles help fire-affected communities get back on their feet faster. Made with a custom-engineered vinyl-ester resin, an additional fire-resistant FRP shield keeps these utility poles standing strong when subjected to fire. FireStrong poles have low thermal conductivity and high dielectric strength. Each pole is equipped with an irreversible temperature monitoring system that helps utility companies know when a pole has had critical fire damage and must be replaced.

FireStrong poles were designed for chaparral fires that typically last less than three minutes with a temperature threshold of 2,100°F. These utility poles have been tested in full section in wildfire simulation and post-tested to determine full section strength retention.

FireStrong poles are more sustainable than wood, steel or concrete alternatives:

  • 5 times lighter than wood poles
  • Better tensile strength than steel
  • Use less carbon to transport
  • Require fewer labor hours to install and maintain
  • Double the typical service life of a wood pole – sometimes more
  • Don’t leach chemicals into the surrounding area

Fire-Retardant Composite Poles Keep the Lights On

When wildfires raged through Silverado, California, in 2007, Plantenders Nursery was in trouble. Wildfires knocked out Silverado's utility poles, leaving Plantenders without power to their plant-watering system for two weeks. Owner Laurie Park lost over $150,000 between plants and equipment. “We were grateful we didn’t lose our lives or our home, but $150,000 in losses was a significant setback. It’s taken a long time to make that back.”
