A case study for FRP compared to aluminum is a recent design for a cantilever sidewalk to be attached to a vehicle bridge. The 5’ wide sidewalk is supported on floor beams at 7’ spacing. The aluminum design consisted of 3/8’ plate on 3.5” angles with a 1/8” pad. All these pieces were to be bolted together. The FRP solution was a one piece slab deck at the same total thickness of 4”. Pricing for the materials were similar, but the installation of the FRP is much faster and lower cost.
